As we navigate this unprecedented time, improving immunity is top of mind. And what to do might be overwhelming for many of us. There are a few simple habits we can practice to keep our immune system strong. And let’s be clear that no supplement, diet or lifestyle modification – aside from social distancing, proper hygiene, hand washing and wearing a mask – can protect you from getting the Corona Virus but the recommendations below can help boost immune health.
Let’s start with lifestyle. Many of us are experiencing extra or different stress so get enough sleep. Seven hours or more. Limit your screen time before bed and sleep in a completely dark room.
Move. Get some exercise every day. This can be as simple as going for a daily walk. If you can walk in nature, even better. Moderate exercise reduces stress, promotes healthy turnover of immune cells and reduces inflammation.
Manage your stress and anxiety levels. Chronic stress or anxiety promotes inflammation and imbalances immune cell function. Meditate, exercise, journal, do yoga or other mindfulness practices. And talk to your doctor about the benefits of seeing a licensed therapist or counselor.
Do something that makes you happy. Everyday. Not matter what is happening. This will help boost your immunity.
Now let’s talk diet. Eat more plant foods. Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants and the fiber helps feed your gut bacteria. A strong microbiome can improve immunity. It really is true that you have to eat your vegetables!
Eat healthy fats. Omega-3 fatty acids, for example, support your immune system by helping reduce inflammation. Omega-3’s can be found in salmon and chia seeds.
Stay hydrated. Preventing dehydration is important to overall health and organ function. Water is the best recommendation. Drink enough water daily to make sure your urine is pale yellow. The amount of water needed can vary from person to person. Start with eight 8 oz. glasses per day.
And consult your doctor or health care practitioner about taking immune boosting supplements.
3 tbsp. raw cacao ( my favorite brand is Navitas)
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. maca root powder
1/4 tsp. pink salt
1/8 tsp. cayenne (optional)
1/4 tsp. ground turmeric (Navitas brand is by far the best on the market)
8 oz. boiling water (add more or less water depending on your taste)
coconut sugar or honey to taste (optional)
Pour all of the powders into a beautiful cup. Add 8 oz. boiling water. Whisk together with a fork or a handheld milk frother. Sweeten with coconut sugar or honey if desired. Top with a teaspoon of coconut cream or your favorite plant milk for a creamier drink. Sit back, relax and enjoy.
